Use Your Claude Subscription
If you already pay for Claude, you can use that plan to power Silk. You don’t need an OpenRouter account, an API key or credits, and Silk’s AI costs you nothing on top of your Claude plan.
It works on macOS and Windows from Silk 1.1.81. If you don’t see the option, update Silk first. Nothing changes for you unless you choose it.
What you need
- A paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Silk connects to your plan through Claude Code, and Anthropic only includes Claude Code in paid plans.
- Claude Code, Anthropic’s free app. You don’t need to know how to use it, and Silk can install it for you in one click (below).
Set it up
- Open the Silk panel and click the gear icon to open Settings & tools.
- Under Power Silk with, click Claude.
- If it says Not installed, click Install Claude Code. Silk downloads Anthropic’s official installer from claude.ai and runs it for you. It needs no admin password and usually takes under a minute.
- Click Sign in with Claude. Your browser opens Anthropic’s sign-in page. Sign in and approve.
- Back in Silk, the Claude row shows Connected with your plan, and you’ll see Signed in as your email. Click Done. That’s it.
From then on, Settings shows Silk is powered by Claude Pro · Sonnet (or your plan and model). Click Change to see the options again.
Choosing a model
Once you’re connected, a Model menu appears. Leave it on Recommended (Sonnet) unless you have a reason to change it.
| Model | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Sonnet | Recommended. The best balance of quality, speed and plan usage for everyday Silk tasks. |
| Opus | Anthropic’s most capable model. Worth trying for long, complicated jobs, but it uses up your plan’s allowance faster. |
| Haiku | The fastest and lightest. Fine for simple tasks, less careful on multi-step work. |
Silk always uses Anthropic’s latest version of each model, so new Claude releases reach you without a Silk update.
What to expect
- Usage counts against your Claude plan. Silk shares your plan’s allowance with everything else you do in Claude, including the Claude app and Claude Code. Heavy use, or Opus, can reach your plan’s limit sooner. Max plans have a much bigger allowance than Pro.
- There’s no API spend panel. It only shows when you use an OpenRouter key. You can check your usage in your Claude account’s usage settings.
- We haven’t benchmarked Claude in Silk yet. Our model results cover OpenRouter and ChatGPT plans. We’ll add Claude when we’ve run the full test.
- The setup video still talks about OpenRouter. At the API key step, Silk shows all three options, and signing in with Claude moves the video on just like saving a key.
Switching to ChatGPT or OpenRouter
In Settings, click Change, then pick ChatGPT or OpenRouter. If you saved an OpenRouter key before, it still works. To disconnect your Claude account, pick Claude and click Sign out.
You can switch at any time. Some people keep two options set up: Claude for everyday use, and OpenRouter for when they hit their plan’s limit.
Problems
Installing Claude Code didn’t finish
Silk shows Install didn’t finish with the reason. Click Try installing again. If it fails again, install Claude Code yourself:
- Click Rather install it yourself?
- Silk shows one command. Copy it into Terminal (Mac) or PowerShell (Windows) and press Enter.
- When it finishes, come back to Silk and click I’ve installed it.
More ways to install Claude Code opens Anthropic’s page with other options. A company computer may block the installer; if so, ask your IT team, or use ChatGPT or an OpenRouter key instead.
The browser sign-in doesn’t come back to Silk
- The browser didn’t open: click Browser didn’t open? Open the sign-in page.
- Claude shows you a code: copy it, paste it into the Code from Claude box in Silk, and click Submit.
- You want to start over: click Cancel, then Sign in with Claude again.
Sign-in fails, or Claude says your plan doesn’t include Claude Code
Check that you’re signing in with the account that has your paid Claude plan. Free Claude accounts can’t be used.
”You’ve reached your Claude plan’s usage limit for now”
Your Claude plan’s allowance has run out. This isn’t a Silk bug or a Silk charge. Silk’s message shows when it resets. You can:
- wait for the reset,
- switch to a lighter model (Sonnet or Haiku) if you were on Opus,
- upgrade your Claude plan, or
- switch Silk to ChatGPT or an OpenRouter key in Settings to keep going now.
”Your Claude sign-in has expired”
Open Settings, pick Claude and click Sign in with Claude again.
”Claude is overloaded right now”
Anthropic’s servers are busy. Wait a minute and try again.
”Using your Claude subscription is paused for now”
We’ve temporarily turned off Claude mode for everyone, for example while we adapt to a change on Anthropic’s side. Silk has moved you to OpenRouter. Pick ChatGPT or OpenRouter in Settings to keep using Silk, and check back later. Tasks that were already running finish normally.
